Farm Fresh

Fresh Fruit Grown with a Home Field Advantage

Florida is famous for its oranges and grapefruits. But when it comes to fresh produce, citrus is just a drop in the bucket. Along Florida’s Sports Coast, you’ll find acres of farmland overflowing with fresh blueberries, strawberries and kumquats. During the harvest season, many of these fields are open to the public, allowing visitors to pick as much fruits as they can carry while getting a behind-the-scenes tour of a working farm.

Pick of the Bunch

There’s always something so special about being able to peruse through orchards and farms to find tasty produce that catches your eye. Taste-test a berry picked right from the bush, then pile your bucket full of more juicy treats. Compete with your friends and family to see who can gather fruits the quickest.

Try a bite of a new variety of a familiar fruit, or try something totally new. Plus, you have the peace of mind knowing that your haul is the freshest possible—you know these fruits have never been squished into a box or sat around in the back of a truck. Grab your own healthy snacks at Florida’s Sports Coast’s local U-Pick farms.

Try the sweet-than-tart kumquat, the little gold gem of the citrus family, at Kumquat Growers in Dade City from November through March. Blueberries are the MVPs at Blueberry Blessings in Hudson, where you can scour the bushes for fresh blueberries starting in April. From late April through early June, find perfectly ripe, and delightfully fuzzy, peaches at Florida Sweeties/Peachy Keen Orchards in Dade City along with seasonal oranges and citrus.

Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries have never tasted sweeter than when you pick them yourself from Starkey Blueberry Farm in Trinity. Whether you’re looking for succulent berries, juicy watermelon, crisp cucumbers or any fruit and vegetable in between, take a Saturday stroll through Trinity Farmers Market in West Pasco and you’re sure to find the freshest in local produce.

Bet the Farm
