Scalloping Prep 101

Ready to plan an epic scalloping adventure? Grab your mesh bags and snorkeling gear and dive into Scalloping 101 on Florida’s Sports Coast – The best place to scallop in Tampa Bay!

This ultimate guide covers everything you need to know for a successful scalloping experience, from exploring shallow waters to cooking your fresh catch. Dive in and make the most of your scalloping adventure!

Step #1: Find Your Charter

Start by selecting a local charter, and Florida’s Sports Coast has plenty to choose from. These charters are experts in locating the best shallow scalloping spots and come equipped with the necessary gear. It’s a good idea to bring some of your own gear as well, just in case!

Going with a local guide or charter company is your best bet for finding scallops because they will know the best spots to anchor and will take care of everything for you, from snorkeling gear to a charter fishing license that covers everyone in your group.

With this option, little else is needed beyond some reef-safe sunscreen, some water to drink and maybe a few snacks.

If you go it alone, make sure everyone on your boat has a saltwater fishing license (unless age-exempt), snorkeling equipment, a diver-down flag, mesh bags to collect scallops and coolers for storing them.

Step #2: Pack Your Gear

Get ready to gear up for an exciting scalloping adventure by packing all the essentials. It’s smart to have a checklist ready, especially if you decide to explore independently rather than be guided by a charter. Here’s what you might want to bring:

Step #3: Dive Into the Underwater Treasure Hunt!

The moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived—it’s time to go scalloping! And remember, if you choose to scallop without a charter make sure everyone on your boat has a saltwater fishing license (unless age-exempt)! If you’re new to the experience, here’s what you should be on the lookout for:

When you spot a bay scallop, quickly grab it, and place it into your mesh bag. Be vigilant though, believe it or not; scallops can swim away from you by rapidly opening and closing their shells! Once you reach your daily limit of two gallons (with shell) or one pint of meat per person; 10 gallons with shell or a half-gallon of meat per boat, your scalloping adventure concludes, and the culinary experience begins.
