Then and Now: The Hacienda Hotel

On the corner of Main and Bank, in Downtown New Port Richey, sits a palace-like building known as the historic The Hacienda hotel. Bursting with Pasco County history, its eye-popping pink color is indicative of the hotel’s glamourous past. Regarded as “Hollywood East” The Hacienda and New Port Richey were once the favorite vacation spot of the rich and famous, many from the Silent Film Era – a time known for its elegance and prestige. Now, after an extensive renovation, the hotel has once again been resorted to its former glory.

Home Away From Home

For years, The Hacienda was a home-away-from-home for many visiting celebrities, a popular gathering spot among film stars, writers, sports figures, and others. Reported sightings include Thomas Meighan, Gloria Swanson, Lupe Velez, Charlie Chaplin, Johnny Cash and Ann Harding, among other notables. Many of these stars fell in love with the area and ended up purchasing homes in New Port Richey.

It’s All in the Details

The Hacienda’s renovation is a project of nearly 20 years in the making, gaining momentum after developer Jim Gunderson bought the hotel in 2018. With great attention to detail, a key aspect of the renovation involved preserving original features of the hotel on the interior and exterior of the building. The bar top at Sasha’s on the Park, the hotel’s full-service restaurant, is made with reclaimed wood taken from other parts of the building. All the wall mouldings throughout the interior are original and the restored lobby chandeliers are the same as those that greeted guests in 1927. The hotel was officially added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in October 1996.
